THE REAL SOUL BENEATH
creative
being the daughter of athena, creativity is something that comes almost naturally to penny. sure, she's not as fantastic as those who are decendant from apollo or other craft gods and goddesses, but music is her favourite craft to pursue, and she does with a dedicated mind that often allows her to explore a little more, even if she sometimes tries to make reason out of everything.
intelligent
her natural ability to determine fact from fiction is also a trait she inherited from her goddess mother, and grants her the ability to plan well when a reasoned mind is required. this also helps when she is planning a battle strategy, in which she is hardly ever wrong thanks to the blessings bestowed on her from athena herself.
dedicated
her lack of social connections growing up with her father allowed penny more time to be by herself and invest in what she deemed worthy projects. books were one of her favourite things as a child, as were the tiny puzzles that her father would bring home, made of metal and mental strategy that brought her hours of enjoyment. overall, there is very little that penny will leave unfinished once she has been driven to start it.
reasonable
logical thinking has caused penelope to be a rather reasonable person who does not enter fights or disputes unless she feels that it is necessary to solve the issue at hand. though she can be known for her temper and quick judgement at times, she does her best to keep a clear mind and hear all sides before reaching a conclusion, and very rarely does she go back on her choice.
loyal
being at mt. olympus high has allowed penelope an opportunity to interact with other human beings, and ones that share a similar trait. here, she is also closer to the mother she never knew growing up, which has given her a new way of looking at her life. in retrospect, she feels that her childhood was rather lonely, and now strives to create a few new friends that she knows she can trust. they may be few in number right now, but to those who know penny, she is loyal to the end.
brave
she likes to keep her battle skills sharp and ready for use at anytime, which often results in mock fights being created between her and other students at the school. there have only been a few incidents where she has actually been called on for a battle, but each time her skills and her lack of fear in herself have ensured that she keeps a level head when running into a confrontation. overall, bravery is one of the few traits that she has given to herself, for she thinks that there is very little that she cannot do.
strong
as fighting is one of her hobbies, or at least the idea of being physically fit, penny puts herself through numerous routines and physical exercises to make sure that she is ready at any time to fight her next opponent. she likes to run, and spends almost as much time in the gym or outside as she does in the library reading every book she can find. she's not much into building things like her siblings, but occasionally she can be found helping to create some kind of structure or machine.
trustworthy
when people come to her and ask for advice, which happens every-so-often, then penny knows that somethings are meant to be kept a secret. she keeps many things confidential between herself and the teller, even if something makes her squirm on the inside. thankfully, her poker face has saved her many a time from letting people know how she really feels about a situation, even though she does her best to be as honest as possible.
A PIECE OF ANCIENT HISTORY
born the daughter of the greek goddess athena and a mortal police officer, terrence archer, penelope grew up in new york city and quickly adapted to the big city when she grew old enough to walk and talk. her entire childhood was build around an idea of trust with her father, who worked long hours through the week and didn't see his daughter quite as much as he may have liked before her eighth birthday. despite all of the time she spent with a babysitter, penny and her dad grew very close and enjoyed the father-daughter relationship until she turned thirteen and a letter arrived at her door. enclosed in the letter was the startling news that she was a demi-goddess, the daughter of the wise and powerful athena, and that her presence was requested for her own protection at mt. olympus high.
after confronting her father about the letter, terry told he everything, about how he had fallen in love with a woman when he had been on vacation in florida and how the two of them had bonded over the course of a few weeks. and though her modesty prevented the two from becoming closer, terry had felt his heart ripped out at her departure, even though penny showed up on his doorstep almost six months later with a note attatched to her blanket. there had never been any question, he told her, that she was loved by both sides. but of course, if athena was requesting that their daughter go to a school to keep her safe, terry could not object.
that august, only two days before she was to leave for mt. olympus high, there was an attack, and though terry survived the terrible furies who had come for his daughter, penelope had been scratched by them and now bears a mark on her left forearm because she was unable to defend herself against them. she has now spent four years at the school, under the watchful eye of athena and the rest of the gods, as well as the other demi-god children who watch out for everyone. she has not faced any other attacks yet, but even she knows that trouble is brewing. she just doesn't know what.

it was becoming too much, all of it. with her father's beatings, lexi's accusations of cowardice and the rest of the world now thinking that it was cameron who had given her the bruises, carter was at a loss of what to do. she could hardly manage to escape the house anymore with her father watching her so carefully, but even now as she sat in the back booth of the hardrock cafe, alone and hidden beneath a pair of dark shades, she still felt somebody's eyes were watching her every move. there was no reprieve from his grasp, no way out. had her father not gone back to arguing with her lead guitarist alan again then she would never have been able to sneak out this time, which was sure to award her with some more bruises as soon as she returned home.
one hand slowly moved to her ribs, gingerly rubbing the bandages that still lay over her skin and held everything tightly together so that it could heal. at this rate, the chances of her fully healing were slowly going down the drain, especially when his attacks had become more violent than they had been over the last little while. even her sunglasses had a purpose that day besides trying to hide her face from the throngs of screaming fans. it was to hide a black eye, one that she had earned when he struck her across the face for dating cameron, as he obviously did not approve of her choice or the way that she went about keeping it from him. if cameron were to see it, she didn't want to think about what could happen. and markus? forget it...he wouldn't notice anyway she told herself bitterly.
markus might have been the older of the twins, but he certainly wasn't all that observant. a part of carter was furious to know that she had lived with him for a large part of her life and still had the abuse go unnoticed, furious that he didn't care enough to ask her what was going on or find out for himself. but the rest of her was afraid that if he came to know the truth, that their father would turn on him because he'd be able to "take it more." that wasn't an option. not for carter anyway. it was bad enough that kim, lexi and cameron were now aware of her situation, but she would do all that she could to make sure that mark, veper, travis and sabina were kept in the dark, for their own sakes more than hers.
not that it was much of a choice, she thought quietly, a soft sigh pushing past her lips. either way, someone got hurt.
